Poker Strategy: Check/Raise
The major downside to check/raising in poker is that you are letting your opponent see a card for free if they do not bet into you. Say for example, you are heads up and holding pocket queens. The flop gives you a set, and also gives your opponent a flush draw. If you check, and your opponent checks then they get to see the turn for free. You are just handing them the opportunity to make a flush without making them pay to make it.
However, if you check the flop and your opponent bets, then you can sucker them in by just slow-playing your set of Queens. If you check the turn and your opponent bets into you even though they did not make their draw, this gives you the opportunity to raise and most likely your opponent will call just to see the river. This gives you the opportunity to win a bigger pot.
Check/raising is a good poker strategy only when implemented properly. You need to have a monster hand and also be playing against a loose/aggressive poker player that is going to bet into you. Be very careful of letting a player see free cards, they might just wind up making their draw, and you will end up being the fish at the table.
